In the 2017 comedy film written by Julian Barratt and Simon Farnaby, Julian stars as Richard Thorncroft – a washed up actor whose career peaked in the 1980s when he was known for playing Mindhorn, a detective with a robotic eye that could “see the truth”. When a deranged criminal (Russell Tovey) starts terrorising the Isle of Man and telling the police that he will only negotiate with Mindhorn, Thorncroft is brought in and uses the opportunity to try to launch a comeback. Along the way he comes face to face with his former stuntman/rival (Simon Farnaby) and his former co-star/girlfriend (Essie Davis). The cast also includes Steve Coogan, Andrea Riseborough, Jessica Barden, Simon Callow and Kenneth Branagh.

Still the funniest film of 2017. I think Mindhorn will eventually shed the Alpha Papa comparisons and do a Zoolander, i.e. become a far bigger film post-cinema.
