More About Back
More details have been revealed about new Channel 4 sitcom Back, including that Matt Holness is among the cast.
The show’s creator/writer Simon Blackwell (The Thick Of It) has said of Back: “It’s about Stephen (David Mitchell) and Andrew (Robert Webb). They’re in their early 40s. Andrew was fostered with Stephen’s family 30 years ago, along with many other kids, and Andrew remembers it very well, because he kept a diary of everything that happened. Stephen barely remembers it at all, because there were so many other kids who were fostered. So they flash back to see incidents from their childhood, and to see their father Laurie, who’s played by Matt Holness. Laurie has just died at the start of the series, and Stephen is ready to step up and run the family business, the pub. But Andrew arrives at the funeral, and that changes things. Everyone thinks Andrew is very charming and very brilliant. Only Stephen thinks he’s a sociopath.”
In addition to Mitchell, Webb and Holness, the cast includes Louise Brealey, Penny Downie and TVO regular Geoff McGivern. Geoff’s character is actually called Geoff and is described as a man who “lives by his own rules, which are broadly everyone else’s rules except you get to carry a taser.”
Here are the episode synopses for the six-part series:
Episode 1 – Stephen is preparing to take over the family business following the death of his dad, but the unexpected arrival of charismatic foster-brother Andrew starts to change everything.
Episode 2 – After Andrew is left a share of the business in Laurie’s will, he and Stephen have very different ideas about how to clear the pub’s debts.
Episode 3 – When Andrew’s improvements to the pub bring the 5-star TripAdvisor reviews pouring in, Stephen worries that the John Barleycorn is flying too close to the sun. He soon seems to be proved right.
Episode 4 – Stephen and Andrew go on a road-trip to meet the pub’s suppliers, and Stephen learns more about his life than he would like. Meanwhile Geoff is left to run the pub in his own inimitable way.
Episode 5 – The family set about clearing up after the disastrous pub fire. Cass finally goes off travelling for six months and Stephen makes some quite startling discoveries about life, death and Andrew.
Episode 6 – The John Barleycorn is restored and a party is held for what would have been Laurie’s 69th birthday. Stephen finds out some enormous news about Andrew that looks like being the key to getting rid of him for good.
