More details have emerged around the currently filming episodes of Doctor Who featuring Paul Kaye.

Continuing the association of ‘Onion Land’ with the long-running sci-fi smash after director Ben Wheatley and stars Michael Smiley and Tony Way were all involved in last year’s series, we exclusively confirmed Paul Kaye’s part in “a couple of episodes” last week after news of his casting leaked.

Now the BBC’s official Doctor Who website has revealed these episodes are a two part story written by Being Human creator Toby Whithouse, with fellow Being Human allumni Daniel O’Hara on directing duties.

Readers with long memories may recall that, four years ago, Paul appeared in Being Human as vampiric villain Vincent.  His fellow guest star in these episodes, Steven Robertson, is also a veteran of Being Human, having appeared alongside Colin Hoult and Julian Barratt in the show’s fifth and final season in 2013.

On his new role in Doctor Who, Paul Kaye is quoted on the BBC site stating: “As a kid of the 1970s, the two shows you always watched were Top of the Pops and Doctor Who, they were unmissable. I actually wrote a song called ‘Looking for Davros’ in my first punk band and I sang it like a demented Dalek. I got to present TOTP back in the mid ‘90’s and landing this role in Doctor Who completes the dream double.

“Peter is a perfect Doctor and I’m loving every minute of the experience, even the five hours in make-up. What a treat, best 50th birthday present ever!”

Kaye and Robertson will be appearing alongside current stars Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman, as well as fellow guest star Morven Christie, who appeared in Sirens alongside Rhys Thomas. Also along for the ride is Arsher Ali (Four Lions), Colin McFarlane (The Fast Show) and theatre actress Sophie Stone.

For more details on Series 9, which is also the show’s thirty-fifth sustained production run, will be available later in the year. TVO advises you stick close to the official Doctor Who website for more information, and we’ll bring you the relevant bits as and when we can.
