Your Chance To Ask Noel

It’s been a bit quiet on the Noel Fielding front of late. If you’re anything like us, you’ll be missing Noel’s occasional twitter-based intrusions into your life. So wouldn’t it be nice to have the opportunity to find out what he’s been getting up to of late? To ask him what he’s being busy doing? Well now you can!

© The Velvet Onion

© The Velvet Onion

To mark the occasion of his impending landmark birthday Noel has very kindly agreed to talk exclusively to The Velvet Onion. Given how low-key he’s been lately (give or take the occasional Albert Hall gig), this is a rare treat. What’s more, he’s inviting you to decide what we ask! It’ll be a rare opportunity for  fans to find out what really makes him tick.

Please send us your questions for Noel and he’ll answer a selection of the best ones (we’ll credit you if your question gets picked, of course). The more insightful and interesting your question is, the more likely it is to be included. That means marriage proposals and endless questions about his trousers, haircut etc are unlikely to make the grade. Sorry.

Please write your questions in the comments box beneath this post; only those received before midnight (GMT) on Saturday 27th April will be considered and a maximum of 3 questions per person can be entered.

So get your question-posing creative juices flowing and let us know what it is that you’d like to know. If you’re lucky, Noel will be answering your question next week…

Many thanks for your entries – the response has been incredible. You’re an insightful and imaginative bunch! All questions received before the deadline of midnight 27th April will now be reviewed and a selection of the best ones put to Noel. Entries are now closed.

Sorry, but we’re not able to confirm which questions will be included until the interview is edited; unfortunately not all of those asked will make the final cut. We’re aiming to have the interview ready to coincide with Noel’s birthday, but we’ll keep you posted.

Please note that questions which have been asked by multiple people may not be credited to a specific individual.

Please see below for some useful blurb on the terms and conditions of this offer. It’ll hopefully answer any questions that you might have:

Only questions entered into the comments box below this post will be accepted. The Velvet Onion will not accept entries as replies to our Facebook/Twitter pages, comments to any other posts in error or emails to any other email address in our domain, nor any entries received after this time-frame. This is being run entirely by The Velvet Onion and Noel Fielding. A maximum of 3 questions per person.  All entries must be received by midnight GMT on Saturday 27th April.  Offensive and/or obscene entries will not be included.  The questions used in the interview will be selected by The Velvet Onion and Noel Fielding, and their decision is final. The Velvet Onion reserves the right to amend questions and include additional questions. The Velvet Onion reserves the right to withdraw this offer if any overriding issues arise which are outside of their control.

    1. What are your backstage rituals, in other words, what do you do before a gig? For example, Mel Gibson hires a tiny gypsy to rub ointment made out of cows brains onto his body to help him concentrate. Bryan Ferry also drinks balsamic vinegar before a gig.

    2. How do you feel about having fans, being that 85% of them are females, 10% are little blue boys and 5% are unicorns?

    3. How long do you think you’ll continue doing the Boosh? Is the Boosh something that you feel you’ll only work on for a specific period of time like Monty Python? Or do you feel the Boosh is something that you’ll keep working on and off for overtime like Rolling Stones?

Cheers! Looking forward to seeing Series 2 of Luxury Comedy and some more Boosh in the future!

1.My birthday is on the 2nd of July, the same day as the Funk (Mighty Boosh) died…I never know what to do….should I celebrate or should I mourn the Funk…?This problem has been haunting me for ages!!What do I do????xx

2.Obviously as well as having many fans, there are many rude people who just have so much prejudice and refuse to accept you for who you are and respect and appreciate the beauty that you bring to this world. What would you recommend to a person who is someone that society considers a “freak” for being simply just who they are and not really hurting anyone; just being different to others and not accepted for that-how should they deal with the bum bums that decide to hate on them?

3.The Luxury Comedy DVD comes out 1 day before my birthday (yayyy!!) in the UK so I’m off my tits with happiness :D.Will you be doing a DVD signing in the UK (like you did in Australia)??(If yes then PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE come to Leeds- make Julian proud 😉 )

  97. This is so lovely and gracious of Noel, and so wonderful of TVO to help make it happen! Thank you to both of you.

    Three questions:

    1. Every artist knows the feeling of occasionally being really surprised by something they’ve created. What things have you produced (jokes, writing, episodes, performances, art pieces, etc.) that have really made you feel proud, or that have surprised you in some way?

    2. Do you feel an artist needs to be constantly exposing themselves to new things and ideas and experiences and influences, in order to feed inspiration? If so, what kinds of “brain food” have you been enjoying recently?

    3. A big theme in the Jelly Fox episode of Luxury Comedy involved everybody having some nerdy and sort of embarrassing habits or personal interests. So what are your nerdy, not-so-cool habits and interests and passions?

    Questions for Noel:

    1. When you’re filming Luxury Comedy, because the costumes, make up and animations are so elaborate, do you have to have the sketches written in stone, or can you improv and try things out? I can imagine it’s a tight filming schedule.

    2. Do you want to do stand up in the US? The Bridgetown Comedy Festival is every April in Portland, Oregon. It’s a three day event that would be perfect for you! This year we had (among others) Dana Gould, Reggie Watts and Peter Serafinowicz. Bridgetowncomedy.com (btw, I’m not affiliated with the event, I just think it’s a perfect venue to get you doing stand up here without having to carry the whole show yourself.)

And, thanks TVO! You guys rock!

  111. First off, like so many others I want to thank TVO and Noel Fielding, because what better way could there be for us Fieldmice to celebrate our idol’s birthday? So I send lots of baileys and strawberry bootlaces to both of you.

    I wanted to ask-
    1) What about the Gary Numan sitcom you mentioned in Boosh series 3 extras..could he make a cupboard-related appearance in new Luxury Comedy?
    2) Old Gregg: the most beautiful transsexual scaly merman in existence. What was the future for him and the lovely Howard Moon?
    3) When I’m writing I like to be isolated and away from everyone unless I’m at school. So I was wondering, when you’re creating your art work do you enjoy this same isolation (no Milky Joe quote there) or do you prefer to be around noise and people; as your bright, brilliant paintings, scribblings and art seem to suggest?

Again, thank you both very much for this chance and I wish Noel the most wonderful 40th birthday! x

    1. In The Mighty Boosh, yours and Julian’s characters last names both combine to “Noir Moon.” There is a really trippy 70s film about a talking unicorn, that seems right up your alley (being as you have stated you used to watch obscure 70s films growing up) and the film is called “Black Moon” is this what inspired the last names for your Boosh characters? I’ve always been curious!

I’m not sure how many of these posts will get read or answered, yet I felt it necessary to let you know Noel, that you have at least one older than the norm person that thinks the world of you. I’m a happily married artist, and mom of a teen, who found The Mighty Boosh (via Adult Swim), and has since watched every episode of that and Luxury Comedy. You simply cheer me up. Your imagination and style are brilliant. I feel like I’m on the journey with you in every character you create, play, and paint. What I’d give to sit over a drink of your choice, and get to know the man behind all that creativity, and joy. So, my question is, is that even a possibility? I’d love a fiend like you in my life. No creepy intentions, just an honest question. I had to ask.

    Hi Noel and TVO!

My 8 year old daughter, Evelyn, and I are working on a children’s book. Some of the characters include a buttermoose, a picklecat, and a janitor named Bob. Would you do the illustrations for us?

Alice Cooper is another artist I admire. Is he scheduled to appear on Luxury Comedy as Smooth’s crazy American uncle or on Buzzcocks as his adorable self in the upcomming year?

I recently turned 40… 1973 was a good year. I just wanted to mention that. Enjoy your birthday, Noel!!!

You never generalize in your comedies. Instead you create imaginary but specific individuals and worlds with their own logic. When I saw Blake’s Ghost of a Flea appear in your show, it came to me that he said something like “only fools generalize”. He also seems to mean that imagination IS reality.

This makes me wonder if you can say something about how your art education and interest in art affected you in the way you see the world and how it shaped your attitude to life? I mean apart from the more obvious aesthetic and visual influences.

(Being from Sweden I hope my English isn’t too abstract).

First of all I just want to say that you are such an inspiration! You bleed creativity and are so humble. It’s glorious haha. Anyways here’s my three questions:

    1) If you could have dinner with any 3 characters from Mighty Boosh or Luxury Comedy who would they be and why? I know it’s hard it’s like picking a favourite child! Haha.

    2) What would you dream team on Never Mind the Buzzcocks be?

    3) If you weren’t doing comedy or art – which you are brilliant at – what would you be doing?

So there it is! Keep up the great work and come back to Toronto soon 😀

  196. Hello! ….so, here is the thing: I’ve met a lot of people who tell me that I’m funny and that I should go into comedy. The problem is I don’t think it’s true. I’m more “contextually funny” I mean something happens then I make a joke out of it ..that’s not enough to go out and do stand up…I’ve heard you first whent and saw other comedians doing stand up, and that helped you…but …I guess my question is, how do you come up with a structured joke, that can be a potential stand up material? All I have are situations ….that’s not good enough though

What do you think of women in comedy? why do you think there are less popular women than men in comedy?

Now…those were my questions, but I I have to take the chance and ask one more..

have you heard of Venezuela/What do you think of it? (that’s 2 in 1? I’ll coun’t it like one, there is just one question mark)

    2) You’ve mentioned several rock bands and artists that influence your comedy & art. Other than Rick James, are there any R&B, Hip Hop or Rap artists you’re into?

    3) What do you love most about your mum? What do you love most about your dad?

But, best of luck with choosing from the long list of other fan’s questions, love to you and your work. I hope you have a great year including your 40th birthday and any projects your working on at the moment. Good Luck, Noel (Mouse-cat)

Okay, here we go (Grand National Style 😉 )….

    1. After seeing you and Russell Brand make a rare appearance at the Royal Albert Hall, it made me think whether ‘The Goth Detectives’ could be made into a rock/goth band (both Russell and yourself have an interesting singing voice) or adapt your Goth Detective show into a Marvel comic style magazine ,which could include the cameo appearance of Alice Cooper (By the Way Noel, the comic you did was a-mazing 🙂 ) So,what would be your next take on Goth Detectives?

    2. Since a lot of fans have asked about your range of boot-wear (Don’t worry it’s not the same as everyone else), it made me wonder whether you would consider making a shoe line of boot wear, it can be any type of shoe and signature style and if you did what type of shoes/ boots would you make with a catchy brand name and why?
