A Golden Afternoon In Soho

A chilly autumnal afternoon in a historic square in London’s Soho. A giant billboard, a row of easels and paints, Tudor minstrels, a breakdancing techno-hedgehog, and a shambleton in a yellow boiler suit. Plus the obligatory enthusiastic collection of black and neon madcap fans. It must be another Scribblings event!

This weekend witnessed the fourth signing/painting event to mark the launch of Noel Fielding’s art book The Scribblings of A Madcap Shambleton, following similar events in Oxford Street, Edinburgh and Manchester.

The magnificent Tudor Units provided medieval musical accompaniment to Noel Fielding’s live billboard painting. The painting session offered a great opportunity to see Noel’s creativity in action, as he alternated between hurling pots of paint across the vast canvas, standing back to ponder what should come next, then diving straight back in to daub colour upon colour upon colour.

This was accompanied by what can best be described as improvised stand-up as Noel chatted to the assembled crowd, bantered with the demonstrative front row and guided us through the primary-coloured world he was creating in paint.

Noel was ably assisted throughout all of this by Dave Brown, who also treated the crowd to an impressively energetic breakdancing interlude (resulting in a grazed forehead).

Afterwards books were signed, gifts shared, photos taken, hugs given and received and songs sung. We danced to woodwind solos to stay warm. It’s a testament to how entertaining the afternoon was that people only noticed the cold as darkness fell and the last of the queue reached the signing table. As ever, Noel and Dave were touchingly appreciative of the fans who had come, thanking everyone for waiting in the cold all afternoon (as they themselves shivered in their boiler suits!).

As everyone  hurried off to thaw out, clutching their signed goodies and precious photos – and with grins stretched across their faces, it was clear no one had minded the cold one bit.

  1. I was wondering is noel fielding doing any more signings?

    • Dave said there’s supposed to be one in Oxford on Saturday but it’s yet to be 100% confirmed. He said that’s the last one before Christmas but they’ll do more in January but nothing’s been confirmed as to where or what dates. I’m personally hoping for a Liverpool signing as I’m going through my student loan really quickly buying tickets to Manchester and London for them haha. It’s totally worth it though, they’re both lovely :]
..any ways I’ll stop rambling.. hope that helped!

    • I have no idea sorry. I only know that stuff cuz it was on Dave’s twitter. I guess we’ll just have to keep an eye out! And sure, it’s no problem :]

i may sound really stupid now, but there’s limited wristbands isnt there, like, to the signings? how early usually do you have to get there to guarantee getting one? I dont want to get there and then be way late 😦

    • No it’s fine I always worry about that too. Well for me it depends what time the wristbands are being given out when I turn up. But I was one of the winners for the Manchester signings so I just turned up at 10am to collect my wristbands and book then just waited around. I went to the Soho one as well but my friend didn’t wanna get there early (much to my annoyance) so I agreed to just watch them paint with me meeting them 2 weeks before haha. But luckily when we got there, there were some wristbands left so I got to meet them again any ways :]
So yeah, I can’t really say a definitive time from my experiences of the signings. But it depends on you really. If you’re willing to wait for hours I’d say get there as early as possible, cuz you don’t know about the other fans, know what I mean? Next time it’s possible for me to go to one, that’s what I’m gonna do. Let’s face it, half the experience is the anticipation of seeing them any ways :] both times I’ve been I’ve had a great time. I can’t emphasise how great TVO and Dave and Noel are. Dave let me warm my hands on his coffee ^.^ hahaa. Oh God, sorry I’m rambling again! Hahaa!

  4. hahaha its fine! well done for being a winner ahaha 🙂 well i have a lot of friends who want to go meet them, so even if i win the competition (hopefully!!!) i’d have to get there mega early. i was thinking like 2 hours early 😐 but it’d be well worth it, i’d camp overnight!!!

    • Hahaa I agree! I’d do that. Next time I go, my mayte who couldn’t go to either of the others with me is determined to go so I’m taking her and camping out haha.
Yeah thanks haha, it was awesome to win, esp cuz you’re priority at the actual event so you feel all smug ^.^ haha. Is it the Oxford one you’re going to or gonna wait till they’re nearer? Hope you win either way! 😀

  5. Really would love to go to one of these signings, it’s unfortunate that they get planned short notice and always on saturdays, I work in retail at weekends and the hours are done a couple of weeks in advance, and all leave is essentially cancelled in the run up to Christmas. hoping to get to one soon though. (Come down Southampton/ Portsmouth way??) x x
