Next week sees Bob Pipe‘s legendary The Forgery Club return as part of a specially curated night in aid of Greenpeace.

Selected by Bob himself, the night of Friday 13th February will feature Pippa Evans (The Now Show, Newsjack), duo Trodd Et Bratt (Well Done You), Holly Burn (Bad Bridesmaid), and Lou Sanders (Good News) on the bill.  Give Out Girls writer Hatty Ashdown will be the host for two hours of great comedy.

After that, there’s live music from Ned Dylan, The King’s Parade and Jenny Said Yes, folowed by DJ sets from King Toby, Tropical Beats, The Bastard Brothers, DJ Dave and The Spigel Has Landed until 3:30am.

It all takes place at Passing Clouds on Richmond Road, London – just down the road from Dalston Junction Station, with tickets a mere £5 in advance or on the door.

Anyone turning up after the comedy will pay double that, so that’s even more of an incentive to see some great comic talent and support a great cause into the bargain.  For more info on the fantastic work of Greenpeace, and the Arctic Sunrise Campaign this night will directly be funding, visit their website.

TVO’s Review Of The Year 2013: Part One

1 Jan

2013 has been a funny old year in Onion Land. We’ve seen our regulars scoop bucketloads of awards, from Best British Film at the Empire Awards to International Emmy Awards and everything in-between. Some names on our roster have reached new heights of success, becoming household names to people who have no idea of their cult origins. Others have just continued being quietly amazing, but all of them have been worthy of your attention.

As a result, we’ve been ploughing through the 12 months of TVO, to pluck out the best bits from over 700 news stories across 2013. This first instalment of our round-up covers January-March, and is jam packed with forgotten treasures and instant classics alike.  Enjoy.

The year began quietly, with the only key new show on the box being, on the surface, designed for kids. FIT was a sports-based sketch show on CBBC from the team behind Sorry, I’ve Got No Head, and featured TVO regulars Tony WayRufus Jones and Aisling Bea in its ensemble cast. For the most part, however, it was the involvement of Peter Serafinowicz – reprising his beloved cult character Brian Butterfield – which got everyone’s attention…

On the other end of the spectrum, Michael SmileyDan Tetsell and Simon Farnaby turned up in the very-much-for-grown-ups cyber-thiller Utopia on Channel 4. The show concerned itself with attempts to trace the only known copy of a graphic novel which left a trail of bloody carnage in its wake. With Four Lions star Adeel Akhtar part of its ensemble cast, as well as Kill List actor Neil Maskell as a creepy hitman, and The Thick Of It‘s Paul Higgins as a blackmailed civil servant, the show became an instant cult hit, and will be returning for a second series in 2014.

Closer to home, and the good folk of Onion Land seemed keen to dish out advice. Comedic agony aunt Rachel Stubbings was offering specially crafted miniature versions of herself for sale to anyone in need of a friendly ear. Or, to be more exact, a bit of unemotional plastic which happened to look a bit like her, in a variety of costumes. The Stubby Buddy was a quick sell out, though something tells me we won’t be seeing them in the shops next year…

Elsewhere, conceptual artist and Luxury Comedy star Kim Noble was offering handy tips on how to buy an oven

And as Bowie-fever gripped the world, James Cook released his own, haunting interpretation of Mr Jones’ classic track, Ashes To Ashes

We’ve previously mentioned that there’s a unique and exciting comedy event taking place in December, which is being organised by the very marvellous Forgery Club. Well now we have some more information to share with you…

The Forgery Club End-Of-The-World Extravaganza, ‘Club Apocalypse’, will be held on Saturday 8th December in a secret location in St. Paul’s (Central London). Its purpose is to celebrate the end of the world in style, with the party to end all parties! The location will be announced 48 hours before event and you’ll be directed to the venue by the board of Forgery Club characters. So far so awesome-sounding, huh?

The evening will be hosted by legendary cult sketch group The Pros From Dover (Phil Whelans, Richard Glover & Sean Garrett) and will include comedy, music, party games, general barminess and DJs until 2am. Doors open at 7pm and tickets are only £10 (over 18s only). You can buy your tickets here. Get in!

For more information about the acts – which includes our very own Colin Hoult – performing on the night visit the event’s facebook page.  More artists are still being announced, so it’s well worth keeping an eye on it.

And while you’re at it, look out for the Club Apocalypse competition coming to TVO soon!

Forgery And Secrets

The Forgery Club is a themed character, sketch and musical comedy night run by the very lovely Bob Pipe, and on December 8th it promises an evening like no other.

We’ve frequented a few Forgery Club gigs, and have been lucky enough to witness a number of TVO acts performing at the shows. The special event on 8th December will be held at a secret location, and the line-up will be kept under wraps too (but given Bob’s comedy connections it’s bound to be a good ‘un). Rumour has it that this won’t be your bog-standard comedy show, and you can expect a fair few surprises.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Greenpeace, the environmental organisation. And there’s no better way to celebrate the amazing work that its volunteers have done for our environment than with some comedy and music!

The Forgery Club will be curating some smashing comedy for the evening; a smidgen of these acts have been announced so far, and they include Waen Shephard, Nick Revell and Lou Sanders…plus loads more to be announced!

The celebrations carry on with some blasting music for you to enjoy, plus DJs to carry you through to the early hours!

It all goes down on Saturday 15th September in East London. You couldn’t ask for more and all this for just £7-£10, plus all the proceeds go direct to Greenpeace. For more information and to buy your tickets, it’s all right here. Also, to keep an eye on the growing line-up,  join the event’s Facebook page.

Speaking of the Forgery Club, the man behind it and good friend to TVO, Bob Pipe, has announced there is to be a Top Secret gig coming up on the 8th December. Everything has to be kept schtum for now, but expect an evening to remember. We’re bursting with excitement about it – but all we can say is keep peeling for more news!
