Downstairs Scribblings

25 May

© Noel Fielding/Hooligan Art Dealer

A new exhibition of Noel Fielding‘s paintings opened today at Gallery Maison Bertaux.

The collection includes artworks which haven’t previously been shown, with part of the show dedicated to Noel’s vibrant studies of Elvis Presley (some of which are included in his book Scribblings of a Madcap Shambleton).

You can see the paintings in the basement tea room at Maison Bertaux, 28 Greek Street London.  We can recommend spending a lazy afternoon in their company, with a pot of cinnamon tea and  a pastry!

The paintings are also available to buy, so if you’re interested in owning an original Noel Fielding artwork visit Hooligan Art Dealer’s site.

Update: PLease note that the full exhibition hasn’t yet been hung, due to recent adverse weather conditions. The final paintings will be added to the collection next week – so probably worth waiting until then.

Success At The NMEs!

1 Mar

For the handful of people that have managed to miss the news about last night’s NME Awards which has been floating around online today, here’s the scoop:

Booshniverse-related artists were up for three awards: Best Book (Scribblings of a Madcap Shambleton), Best Film (Submarine) and Best TV Show (Never Mind the Buzzcocks). Success was seen in two of the three categories: Best Book and Best Film. Best TV Show was won by Fresh Meat. Thanks to all of you who voted.

Big, velvety congratulations to Noel Fielding and Dave Brown for the Best Book win and to Richard Ayoade for his award for Best Film. Sadly these awards weren’t given out on the night, so we didn’t get to see our boys up on stage collecting their gongs. Noel and Dave were at the event, however, and we had the joy of seeing Noel introduce Kasbian onstage, dressed as The Hitcher. This alone was worth the ticket price!

For the full list of winners and to more photos of the Awards visit NME.com. To watch the Awards in full, tune in to Channel 4 on Saturday (March 3) at 11.55pm (GMT). Half an hour of highlights will be shown on T4 at 9.25am (GMT) the same day.

And if you fancy a peek at Dave Brown’s snaps from the night take a look at his twitter photos.

Great APE

1 Feb

Today Dave Brown tweeted that new new photos of the Luxury Comedy posters he created were available to view on his website APE. Indeed they are, but we reckon these latest additions to Dave’s portfolio of work provide the perfect opportunity for you to check out everything else he’s done.

© Dave Brown

TVO readers will probably be most familiar with his creative output on Mighty Boosh projects, on which he often collaborated with Nigel Coan and Ivana Zorn of Nipple. This included the design work for The Boosh Live At Brixton DVD, The Future Sailors DVD and The Mighty Book of Boosh.

His more recent Booshniverse-related projects have included the photography and design work for Noel Fielding’s art book The Scribblings of a Madcap Shambleton and the omnipresent Luxury Comedy ad campaign. Of the latter, Dave explains on his site how the colourful designs of the posters and their media environment play off each other: “Just as the show stands out amongst a sea of colourless, bland, reality based programmes on television, we used the colourful, engaging and highly original imagery of the show to pop out of the wintery, grey, urban landscapes they inhabited.”

© Dave Brown

Dave’s design work is distinguished by his bold use of colour and attention to detail, both of which make his designs ping out and poke you in the eye with their visual energy. Playful flavours of street art and childhood make him the perfect visualiser for the world of Boosh and everything that lies beyond it. We thoroughly recommend you take the time to take a look and see what else he’s been up to.

Spring Back In Time: A Look Back At April-June 2011

2 Jan

So far our review of 2011 has covered January to March. Today we bring you the sequel: April to June. Aaaah, Springtime…the time of fresh starts and new beginnings! And it turned out to be a very busy time in the Booshniverse too!

April

© BBC

April started with the news of Chris O’Dowd’s appearance in The Crimson Petal and The White, a Victorian drama adaptation miles away from The IT Crowd! It was a fantastic production with a great cast and Chris was excellent in it.

The London Comedy Writers Festival took place this month, with input from TVO favourites Alice Lowe, Jaqueline Wright and Colin Hoult. It was a very busy month for Alice, she starred in  Tap at the Window, appeared with Antony Elvin at Popcorn Comedy, and had the pilot  Alice’s Wunderland broadcast on BBC Radio 4. At the time we were lucky to bag an interview with her which you can read here. We also reviewed Jackal films 2010 calendar project.

Colin Hoult announced the second New Adventures show and Paul Foot was in Australia, tweeting as he went.

TVO enjoyed a bit of a spring clean itself in April with a revamp of the TVO Amazon store, making it even easier to cater for all your comedy needs!

Dave Brown: The Scribbling Slasher

16 Dec

Not too long ago, in a petite coffee shop that straddles the the suits of Clerkenwell and the hipsters of Hackney, The Velvet Onion were lucky enough to catch Dave Brown in his busy life for a chat – Velveteer Paulyne caught up with him following the release of Scribblings Of A Madcap Shambleton and now we can bring you the first part from our afternoon with the designer.

“I wanted to get across the idea that Noel paints as he writes and writes when he paints. It’s how his mind works, his comedy is very visual.”

Although the book is a collection of Noel Fielding’s artwork, with Brown taking on the entire design of the book I wanted to find out the process of putting it together and working with the artist. Dave explains, “When I was putting the Boosh book together and going through Noel’s mountain of sketchbooks, I realized that there was obviously loads that was Boosh related but there was also loads that wasn’t and more related to his stand up, so it was really a case of ‘With all your paintings and this, we could make an amazing book for you’.”

Real Life Scribblings Are Back!

15 Dec

If you’ve bought a copy of The Scribblings of a Madcap Shambleton (or even if you haven’t – in which case why ever not?), you’ll be pleased to know that Noel Fielding‘s paintings are once again on display at Gallery Maison Bertaux.

© Mog/The Velvet Onion

This impromptu exhibition of Noel’s art presents a welcome opportunity to see his paintings in the flesh, where you can fully appreciate the scale and texture of his work. You can also see some of the artworks which had to be removed from the book for copyright reasons. And all while you drink tea and munch on amazing pastries!

While you’re there why not pick up one of the Fielding-approved limited edition canvas prints which are on sale too? Each one is hand-printed on canvas and comes with a certificate of authentication – definitely one for the Christmas list. Maison Bertaux can be found at 28 Greek Street, Soho London.

On the subject of Noel’s scribblings, the book has just been voted number 2 in Kerrang’s Top 5 books of 2011. Congratulations to Noel and to the book’s designer, Dave Brown.

Scribblings In Oxford: A Visual Review

7 Dec

Last Saturday (3rd December) saw Noel Fielding and Dave Brown take on Oxford in the latest leg of their promotion tour for Noel’s book of art The Madcap Scribblings of a Shambleton.

The event at Waterstones consisted of a live painting to a select group of fans, followed by the obligatory sign-a-thon to the wider wristband-wearing population. Comments about the event on twitter afterwards were full of superlatives and giddy praise for the duo. Sadly however, we couldn’t field our ususal team of intrepid reporters so we’re unable to bring you the film and photo reports that we’ve been able to provide for previous signings.

Fret not though, because we’ve managed to track down some pictures from the day on Newscom – and a big thanks to those of you who emailed yours to us too. So, in the absence of a first-hand report, here’s a visual review of the scribblings that took place last Saturday in Oxford.  Enjoy!

If you’d like to see more of Newscom’s photos of the Oxford signing, and of previous events, click here.

A Golden Afternoon In Soho

28 Nov

A chilly autumnal afternoon in a historic square in London’s Soho. A giant billboard, a row of easels and paints, Tudor minstrels, a breakdancing techno-hedgehog, and a shambleton in a yellow boiler suit. Plus the obligatory enthusiastic collection of black and neon madcap fans. It must be another Scribblings event!

© Mog

This weekend witnessed the fourth signing/painting event to mark the launch of Noel Fielding’s art book The Scribblings of A Madcap Shambleton, following similar events in Oxford Street, Edinburgh and Manchester.

© Mog

The magnificent Tudor Units provided medieval musical accompaniment to Noel Fielding’s live billboard painting. The painting session offered a great opportunity to see Noel’s creativity in action, as he alternated between hurling pots of paint across the vast canvas, standing back to ponder what should come next, then diving straight back in to daub colour upon colour upon colour.

This was accompanied by what can best be described as improvised stand-up as Noel chatted to the assembled crowd, bantered with the demonstrative front row and guided us through the primary-coloured world he was creating in paint.

Noel was ably assisted throughout all of this by Dave Brown, who also treated the crowd to an impressively energetic breakdancing interlude (resulting in a grazed forehead).

Afterwards books were signed, gifts shared, photos taken, hugs given and received and songs sung. We danced to woodwind solos to stay warm. It’s a testament to how entertaining the afternoon was that people only noticed the cold as darkness fell and the last of the queue reached the signing table. As ever, Noel and Dave were touchingly appreciative of the fans who had come, thanking everyone for waiting in the cold all afternoon (as they themselves shivered in their boiler suits!).

© Mog

As everyone  hurried off to thaw out, clutching their signed goodies and precious photos – and with grins stretched across their faces, it was clear no one had minded the cold one bit.

Scribblings In Manchester: The Aftermath

20 Nov

Last weekend saw Noel Fielding and Dave Brown undertake a live art installation at Waterstones in Manchester Arndale.  The duo also autographed copies of their new book, The Scribblings Of A Madcap Shambleton, for fans in a mammoth five-hour signing session.

© The Velvet Onion

The Velvet Onion were, as we revealed last week, on hand to document proceedings, and – as one of the biggest signings the store has ever held – so were a lot of other people too!  Oddly enough, the local press material hasn’t appeared online, but The Observer’s interview in-between the painting and the signing has, as well as featuring in today’s print edition.  You can catch up on it here.

The singular photograph you see on The Observer’s website is one of many notable photographer Martyn Hicks took on the day – you can see more (including a couple of TVO cameos!) over at his official site.

But enough of that, you really want to see what your favourite comedic vegetable came up with, don’t you?  Our exclusive video report is below!

As you can see, it was a long and hectic day.  We’d like to thank everyone at Waterstones and Canongate for letting us document proceedings, as well as Noel & Dave for being as accommodating as ever.

Most of all, however, we’d like to thank the fans on the day, who were absolutely lovely to TVO.  We spoke to absolutely loads of you, and sadly due to time constraints only a fraction of our time together could make it into the finished video.  A lot of you left video messages for Noel & Dave, and we don’t want you to think they were in vain – we promise we’ll be editing these messages together and sending them over to the boys privately, so they WILL see what you wanted to say to them in full.

TVO also took lots of photographs on the day, and you can see a selection of these below.

Soho Scribblings On Saturday!

19 Nov

© Megan Giboin

As some of you have already spotted, Noel Fielding and Dave Brown will be launching their latest artistic extravaganza on an unsuspecting public next Saturday 26th November in Soho, London.

Noel (ably assisted by Dave) will be painting a giant a 20ft x 8ft billboard in Golden Square, starting at 1pm with the painting expected to take up to two hours. The painting session is open to everyone to come and watch, although access to the location will be limited and on a first-come-first-served basis.

There will be an art area with paints and easels for visitors to create their own artworks on the day, and fans are encouraged to bring along their own work, so take along your scribblings! All paintings will be uploaded to an online gallery at NoelHeartsArt.com, a new site which launched yesterday. Additional entertainment will be provided in the form of music from Noel’s favourite minstrels (and ours!), the glorious Antony Elvin and the Tudor Unit. TVO will be there to cover proceedings and we hope to get the chance to meet some of you lovely folk there.

There will also be a wristband element to the event; wristbands will be handed out at 10am and only those with wristbands will get access to a special viewing area and a signing. At present we don’t know how many wristbands will be handed out, but as soon as we do, we’ll let you know.  Those without wristbands will be able to watch the painting but won’t get access to the special viewing area or the signing.

This Soho painting is part of a series of live art demonstrations by Noel, following events in London, Edinburgh and Manchester. Further events are expected to take place in December and January. Of course, we’ll be sure to keep you posted!

New information about this event: There will be 100 wristbands handed out for the viewing area, but people without wristbands will have access to the art area. There will be copies of Scribblings on sale on the day, but not Noel’s earlier books or other merch. And there’s no problem at all to get other stuff signed.

Scottish Scribblings Relived

15 Nov

Now with 3 signings for Scribblings Of A Madcap Shambleton over with, we are now treated to seeing what Noel Fielding and Dave Brown got up to on their visit to Edinburgh!

This may have been the only signing that The Velvet Onion were not able to get video-coverage for, but our lovely friends at Canongate were still there to capture the day – from queueing fans to Fielding and Brown painting the window of Urban Outfitters, to them signing their book for the loving fans.

Take a look at the video below to delve into the Shambleton shenanigans at the Edinburgh signing.

You can also find photos taken by Ellie Bow from this signing right here. Remember you can also look back at when TVO attended the London signing and we will also be bringing you coverage of the latest one that took place in Manchester last weekend! Coming very soon so keep peeling!
