Dan Clark has provided another early peek at his new album via Pledge Music.

You can download the track Pippa, by clicking here (if you haven’t done so previously you’ll need to sign up, but it takes all of 5 seconds to do it).

Pippa is one of the best-known classic tunes from Dan’s live shows. It tells the tale of his relationship with Pippa Popadopoulos, and her comedic-named Greek family.

For more information about how you can/should pledging towards Dan’s new album, news about his  forthcoming gigs and how you can vote for an inoffensive t-shirt (!), see our previous post here.

Dan Clark: T-shirts, Shows & More

5 May

Dan Clark has been a busy bee. Not only is he running the most industrious Pledge Music campaign we’ve ever seen, he’s also offering up clothing options and new live shows!

Firstly, you can vote for the t-shirt design that you think should be printed for the album pre-orders. There’s a choice of four options, three of which feature one of the following famous quotes: 1) ‘We’re living in a very scary dairy world’; 2.) ‘Men should just trust their nipples’; 3) ‘Pippa Popadopoulos’. Option 4 is yet to be posted on Dan’s facebook page; to find out what it is when it’s revealed, and to view/vote for the tees, head on over there.

Dan’s also resurrecting his famous comedy night, Clarks, for a run of three shows at Soho Theatre on 4-6th July (inc.). Although the full line-up hasn’t yet been announced, Dan’s comedy knowledge and his industry contacts  make for a ridiculously good show….plus he’s bloody funny too. Double win!

Tickets cost £12.50 and shows start at 9.30pm. For more information and to buy tickets visit Soho Theatre’s website.

Don’t forget you can also see Dan on 6th June at his album launch show at the 100 Club in London. For more information and tickets (allegedly there are only 14 left!)  click here.

Dan’s now at 60% of the total amount that he needs for his album, and there are some great merch options and exclusive content available for pledgers. To get involved click here to access his Pledge Music page.

Catch Up With Onion Land

4 Apr

The last remnants of your Easter Eggs are starting to look like wicked reminders of pure liquid gluttony.  Spring is officially here, though some parts of the country seem to have swapped sunshine for snow.  As you stop to take a breath, you realise this seemingly barren period in Onion Land is actually filled with glorious programming you might have missed!

There’s a number of TVO regulars cropping up in various shows at the moment, and as some of them won’t be on catch-up for very long, we thought it was as good a time as any to give you a brief round-up.

For starters, Colin Hoult and Steve Oram appeared in the Easter Special of Life’s Too Short - the mockumentary series about Multiverse head-honcho Warwick Davis.  Oram’s also been regularly appearing in Heading Out with Sue Perkins, and all six episodes can be caught on catch-up at present.

Then there’s our full blooded TVO shows to savour – with It’s Kevin halfway though it’s initial run, and all episodes available on iPlayer, you can savour Kevin EldonJulia DavisJustin EdwardsMatt Berry, Alex Kirk and many more joining The Actor, Kevin Eldon for some full blooded titting about.  The show continues on Sunday evening.

Over on 4oD is every episode of Anna & Katy - the silly channel-hopping style sketch show from Anna Crilly and Katy Wix, which also features appearances from Fergus Craig, Colin Hoult and David McNeill.  The show wraps up next Wednesday.

There’s also the brand new series of Game Of Thrones featuring Paul Kaye airing on Sunday evenings, which is available on catch-up exclusively to Sky customers, alongside Dan Clark and Katherine Parkinson in Love Matters.

If radio is more your thing, don’t forget that Matt Berry returned for Series 2 of I, Regress last night on Radio 4, who are also in the middle of a rerun of Knowing Me Knowing You… With Alan Partridge.

And if repeats are all you crave, you’ll be pleased to know that Mongrels will be heading to freeview channel Dave from April 12th. All this, plus the release of Sightseers on dvd and blu-ray, and a wealth of archive materials available from our TVO Amazon Stores now!  Get stuck in!

Love Matters

26 Mar

© Sky Living

There’s a brand new comedy show with TVO connections tucked away on Sky Living later this week – so much so we almost missed it!

Entitled Love Matters, the six half-hour comedies are all about the ugly business of relationships.

The series will be airing in three double bills starting on Thursday evening at 9pm, with Dan ClarkKatherine Parkinson and Daniel Lawrence Taylor (How Not To Live Your Life, Hunderby) on hand.

Clark & Taylor star in Episode One, 30 And Counting, which blurs the lines between online dating and reality in a tale by writers Chris Little and Tom Vinnicombe.

© Sky Living

Episode Two, which follows at 9:30pm, is entitled Officially Special.  The episode sees Parkinson as world record official Jo Pepper juggling her bizarre job with her complicated social life.

Later episodes feature the wonderful Isy Suttie, Hunderby star Rebekah Staton, the award winning Sarah Solemani and comedy legend Meera Syal, so they’re definitely worth sticking around for.

For more info on the run, visit the show’s mini-site over yonder, where you can savour trailers, preview clips, galleries and behind the scenes interviews with the cast.

There’s currently no news on a dvd release, but if we hear anything, we’ll keep you posted, so stay peeled!

Update On Dan Clark’s Musical Mission

23 Mar

© Dave Brown / Afrikids

Earlier this month we told you about Dan Clark‘s plans to release his new album using Pledge Music. As promised, Dan has now released exclusive content for those pledging!

If you haven’t pledged yet you can catch a frustratingly short glimpse of a video of Dan being interviewed by Rich Fulcher - but if you dig deep into your pockets and get pledging you can watch the whole glorious thing!  It’s to be found here, if you’re wondering.

Dan’s now 41% of the way there and there are 73 days left to go. To see the full details of what’s on offer, head on over to Dan Clarks Pledge page and get spending!

He will be performing songs from the album at the Album Launch Event on 6th June which is taking place at 100 Club in London, home of the legendary Clarks.

Tickets are £10 each and you can buy them here. If you can’t make it to this one, don’t cry – Dan has promised that he’ll be doing further shows later in the summer.

Pledge Your Life!

13 Mar

Dan Clark has announced himself to be the next artist using Pledge Music for the release of his comedy album! Inspired by Don Danbury’s tunes on How Not To Live Your Life and also some brand spanking new comedy corkers.

Robots in Disguise and IAMX were the last of our lot to make the call out to their fans to help fund the recording, release and touring of their next albums – this time, Clark may already have his polished album ready for release but he doesn’t seem to think that’s quite enough for his fans.

© BBC / Dan Clark

This news comes right after the release of Clark’s musical partner, Ben Parker’s own album release (the debut album of indie duo The Chain) via the same network. As all of our favourite artists have cried out for the pledges and with it being a huge success, I’m sure it won’t be long until DC reaches 100%!

By buying the album via Pledge Music, you also have the option of purchasing some other exclusive goodies, including signed scripts, t-shirts, and tickets to the album launch event (taking place at the home of Clarks, the 100 Club). If those extras aren’t enough for you, you can also get yourself a video message from Dan, a thank you in the album itself or if you’re feeling the need to splurge, the top pledge gets Clark & Co at your house party!

Not only do you get what you have pledged for, but throughout the next few months until release, Clark will be posting up videos, blog entries and other exclusive content only accessible to pledgers!

You have 83 days left to Pledge from today and then you may have missed your chance. So get your orders in before Wednesday June 5th to not leave yourself out!

To see the full details of what is on offer, head to Dan Clarks Pledge page and get ordering!

2012: A Year In Interviews

2 Jan

In 2012 we were lucky enough to get the chance to chat to a few of the artists that we write about on these pages. So here’s a look back at some of the year’s interviews – and the fascinating, colourful and revealing comments that were shared. A big thank you to everyone who gave us their time and permitted us to poke cameras and dictaphones in their faces – we couldn’t do this without you!

“You kind of get sick of photographers going: ‘What about this? Let’s try a look. Gimme a look! thumbs up, relax that jaw, big smile, oooh, Cheeky! Whuhey!’ All that kind of crap. Whereas with this, it was the opposite and I think they enjoyed the novelty. I think there’s a certain power to looking moody.”
Dave Brown talks about the un-comedy portraits in his photography exhibition ‘Tough Crowd’

“You do sort of wonder how many more good dresses you can pull out of your wardrobe. I might just turn up to the next one looking like Tina and go: ‘Hi, everyone. I’m not actually a film star. I don’t have the wardrobe for this.’”
Alice Lowe discusses dressing for the multiple Sightseers premiers

“They keep going on! The London Film Festival was the gala screening, and I went to Cannes for the premiere there, which was very exciting. They had one last Thursday, which I couldn’t go to, and then this one tonight, which is being called the UK Premiere. I’m not sure what the difference is anymore, but it will be fun. I get to wear my suit again.”
Richard Glover’s take on dressing for the multiple Sightseers premiers

“That is completely Noel’s fault. I kept saying ‘Can’t I be called something like Jana or another German name?’ and he said ‘No, Dolly is better’ and he and Nigel Coan were absolutely certain that I was going to be called Dolly. I got really self-conscious about it, and in the early days of filming Tom Meeten enjoyed putting my name in every single sentence because I was so embarrassed about it.”
Dolly Wells squirms about playing a character called ‘Dolly’ on Luxury Comedy

“Before Boosh, I was the shyest person in the world. I was scared of my own shadow, I wouldn’t talk to anyone that I didn’t know. Boosh has made me who I am now. It’s given me an animated, childish confidence. People say that when you’re thirty, you can’t be stupid like that anymore, but who says? There’s no rules!”
Mike Fielding in introspective mood

“We thought we knew what we were doing – we didn’t – and suddenly we found ourselves on stage with all these people like Simon Farnaby. They assumed we must be good, so we had to come up with something. It was all an accident, no actual decisions were made.”
John ‘Willie’ Hopkins talks about his appearances at Ealing Live with Richard Glover.

“I’m not sure I have much of an opinion on mainstream music – I just don’t really listen to it! I imagine if I did listen too much I might not be too complimentary about it, so best not to get involved! Or maybe that’s where I’m going wrong. I think I’ll go and check out the charts RIGHT NOW!”
Sue Denim’s views on mainstream music

“You do get to see why it’s a bad idea to go and kill people, in a really cathartic way.”
Alice Lowe notes that Sightseers has a strong moral code

“Maybe he doesn’t like the idea of being moody for me…the offer’s there, Paul, whenever you’re ready, stop body swerving me and get on your frown for Brown!”
Dave Brown courting Paul Foot for ‘Tough Crowd’

“Yeah. It’s not like I’m gonna go: ‘Well, actually, it’s funny you should say that. I’ve got a little pot of spunk in my pocket.‘”
Mike Fielding’s reaction to fans screaming at him that they want to have his babies

“My brother never stops talking. Usually about sweets.”
Noel Fielding’s analysis of bother Mike

“I’ve secretly always wanted to be in the S.A.S. A friend of mine used to say I could have been in the S.A.S. but on reception.”
Richard Glover talks about his alternative career path

“I’ve got my balls out on telly, they’re horrible things…I’ve got really dangly balls.”
Tom Meeten discusses his award-winning appendages

“Keep the faith! And let’s get The Boosh to make a film before they get too old and grey!”
Oly Ralfe’s message from NY to TVO readers

“Writing with Alice is like writing with your wife. It really is just like being with your wife, and arguing on holiday, whilst sightseeing, then writing it down.

“I tend to write the first draft of stuff, then Amy totally rewrites it! She changes everything, and I’ve learnt over our twenty-odd year relationship to understand how that works for the greater good.”
Director Ben Wheatley’s approach to working with his long-term partner, Amy Jump

“We’ve got the power to take people on a journey – if we want to go to the moon, then let’s go to the moon for 10 minutes!”

“If a drama show goes out on TV and it’s not that good no one kicks up a fuss, no one goes ‘Whoever commissioned this should be shot. I want my license fee back!’ I could easily say that a drama that doesn’t engage me in the first five minutes is the same as a comedy that doesn’t make me laugh, but people just don’t mind as much – they just accept that it’s not their cup of tea. But rarely do people accept that about comedy!”
Dan Clark takes on the harsh critics of comedy

“There’s no limits with him, whereas when you meet an actor for the first time it can be a bit awkward to pull their trousers down or something. With Richard, you can punch him in the face, rape him, and he’ll still come back for more.”
Steve Oram shows his love for working with Richard Glover on Sightseers

“I’ve been looking at Noel’s face constantly for three years, and even I watch him and say ‘There’s NY Cop’. I don’t say ’There’s Noel doing NY Cop’. You’re not looking at Noel, you’re looking at the character. It’s pretty incredible because he’s got such a pointy, distinctive face.”
Nigel Coan, director of Luxury Comedy, talks about Noel’s character performances

“I can’t believe they didn’t have Minstrels!”

Onion Talking: Dave Brown’s Tough Crowd

7 Dec

© Dave Brown

Tough Crowd - the new photo exhibition by Dave Brown, is currently wowing art-lovers at The Strand Gallery in central London.

TVO caught up with the man behind the lens to talk about putting together a series of comedian portraits with a difference…

“It’s not all panel shows, fat cheques & giggles. Comedians are tough. They have to be.”

So says Dave Brown, one fifth of The Mighty Boosh, graphic designer by trade and photographer whenever time has allowed. Over the years, he has documented the madcap adventures of the quintet he is a vital part of, recently hosting an exhibition of his favourite shots culled from a decade of Boosh history. Tough Crowd, in aid of Afrikids, however, is an entirely different beast.

“It came from trying to think of a different angle to shoot comedians,” he explains to TVO in the midst of final preparations for the exhibition at The Strand Gallery. “It’s not that I’ve got a hatred of the way comedians are portrayed in photography, or their posters and stuff, because some of that is great. Photographers like Andy Hollingworth are excellent at it.”

“It’s just the usual persona you see comedians giving out on their panel shows, on stage or in the papers…” he trails off. “Well, they’re mostly always chirpy and cheery. I think a lot of people get the idea that it’s an amazingly glamorous life: that it’s an easy way we make a living, earning loads of money and having a great laugh at the same time. Truth is, it’s not easy… for most people in the industry anyway. It’s a extremely difficult world to occupy. I know loads of comedians, they have to be seriously thick skinned to make it and to stay there. To be a comedian you have to be resilient.” Continue reading

A Crowd At Tough Crowd

6 Dec

Tuesday evening saw the grand opening of Dave Brown‘s new photography exhibition Tough Crowd at the Stand Gallery in London. Velveteers Paulyne and Mog were there and enjoyed an early glimpse of the show.

Mog
The comedians featured in the photographs read like a ‘who’s who’ of The Velvet Onion; it’s tangible evidence of how interconnected this particular group of artists really are. The images themselves are incredibly striking – defined by their wintery colours, crisp details and luminescent eyes. This is a side of the comedian’s persona that we don’t often get to see, and across the faces in the photographs there’s a fascinating mixture of confusion, frustration, guilt and fear. Some of the featured artists haven’t quite let their guard down, but in so doing perhaps reveal how much deeper their fear of comedy failure goes.

The scale of the photographs stops you in your tracks – every whisker and laughter line writ large across the gallery wall. A massive print of Tony Law dominates the ground floor: a noble 19th century explorer with childhood in his eyes.

The contrast between these images and the photographs that Dave took in Ghana make for fascinating viewing: the single wall of gold-tinged skin and warm earth tones provides an interesting step change within the show. Summer and Winter. Them and us.

Even when arriving nearly two hours after doors open, we still found the entrance crammed to gills with the friends and family of Dave Brown, all there too see his stunning work for Afrikids.

As we circled the room and entered each long stretch of hallway it was hard not to be completely entranced by the portraits of so many well-known faces. The heartwarming touch for us was the TVO connection to a large percentage of them; and some even with a long childhood connection (e.g. Lenny Henry), of watching them on Saturday nights in your pyjamas with a cuppa.

Looking around at each of those portraits was a bit like wanting to ask the subjects probing questions but at the same time not wanting to intrude. The idea of each snap is ‘when the laughter stops’ and Dave certainly got this out of each subject. It begs the question what would I think about in that situation?

© Dave Brown

A must see exhibition for you to lose yourself in and come back to us with your own thoughts… if they’re not too private.

To buy a limited edition print of one of the Tough Crowd photographs and to donate to Afrikids at the same time visit the Afrikids website.  There are 100 prints of each subject; A3 prints cost £50 and A2 prints cost £75. To see photos of last night’s opening take a look at photographer Sam Witney’s site and click on ‘Dec 5th’. See how many TVO-related faces you can spot – they were out in force!

Keep your eyes peeled for our exclusive interview with the man behind the camera lens, Dave Brown, coming soon!

On the eve of Dan Clark‘s LA gig, we bring you news of a new interview with the man himself.

Friends of TVO, Such Small Portions, have asked Dan all about his forthcoming shows, his feelings about How Not to Live Your Life ending and his views about non-mainstream comedy. To be honest, they didn’t ask him about that last subject, but Dan gave an interesting answer about it! As he says, “Stand-up at the moment feels like we’ve gone back to the seventies. Men in shiny suits talking about their wives…But I would much rather see Paul Foot or Tony Law pop up on one of these stand-up TV shows than a billion ‘bloke down the pub’ types.”

To read the interview in full, and find out why Dan’s embarrassed about his musical youth, what Tim Minchin has in common with Victoria Wood, and what he knows about series 2 of Luxury Comedy click here.

And if you haven’t booked your tickets for Dan’s These Songs May Contain Jokes UK tour yet (kicking off on 25th October in Nottingham), check this out for details of venues, dates and tickets.

How To Live Your Life With Songs And Maybe Jokes

27 Sep

It’s a bumper news day for Dan Clark fans and here is a summary of what’s to be expected!

A trailer for Clarks upcoming UK tour with These Songs May Contain Jokes has been released!  Clark begins the journey in Nottingham on 25th October with his band including Jimmy Simms and Ben Parker. They’ll be taking some new songs, some old and some How Not To Live… classics on the road with them.

Check out the trailer below and if that couldn’t hype it up anymore, we’ve been unanimous at TVO HQ that the show is astoundingly better than it comes across!  Clark will start in Nottingham and then heading to Brighton, Birmingham, Manchester, London, Bath and rounding it all off in Cardiff. Book your tickets right here and keep peeling for anymore info that comes our way!

If you are unable to make the tour or just can’t get enough of Clark & co, then here is your reminder that the full boxset of How Not To Live Your Life will be available to buy from next Monday! From 1st October you can get your hands on all three series of the show plus the Christmas special finale and some extra special features in one chunky boxset. Bag it in our TVO Shop along with Dan Clark’s full back-catalogue of work!

The Christmas special not only guest-starred Julia Davis as a hilarious, Human Remains-esque creepy neighbour, but the show has been sprinkled with so many great cameos throughout that it’s been a treat in itself.  Rich Fulcher fronted the cameos when he appeared in the original pilot (which we are yet to get our hands on since it’s airing!) , also Arnab Chanda makes a great appearance as the teen that bullies Don for being ‘old’. Plus Tom Meeten made a great triple appearance, first as a Michael Jackson impersonator, an angry tramp and then as an uptight interviewer – (I’d like to imagine that this was all one character throughout the lifespan of the show).
One of the most memorable cameos of all had to be Julian Barratt playing Jackson; Sam’s boyfriend the poetic and “melody-word-formation” (song) writer in series two. For the premier episode of series three, Noel Fielding then took a different turn for his cameo as Marcus, Don’s slick straight-talking boss.

You can read Dan Clark talking about his comedy affiliates and much more in our past interviews, click here yonder to take a look!

Now as part of a deal with the BBC, a number of comedy classics are available to stream free of charge.

These include Saxondale – which also featured Matt BerryJames Bachman and Tom Meeten, and underrated spoof Dr Terrible - featuring Julia Davis.

Also up for free viewing is criminally ignored sitcom Lab Rats featuring Dan Tetsell alongside Chris Addison and Dead Boss star Geoffrey McGivern.

You can also take another look at Rob Brydon’s Annually Retentive which co-stars Sharon Horgan and Alice Lowe, or That Mitchell And Web Look featuring James Bachman.

For something a little bit more ‘out there’, you can also catch rarely seen French animation series A Town Called Panic – which included Lucy Montgomery and Alexander Armstrong in it’s English dub cast.

To browse the full Blinkbox catalogue, click on any of the links above, or be really obvious and fall onto it’s home page via the word Battenberg - and of course, almost all of these shows, and more, can still be purchased the good old fashioned way on dvd and blu-ray via THE VELVET ONION AMAZON STORE!
