The British Comedy Guide Annual Awards Poll is now open! The awards cover all aspects of British Comedy, including radio, so you really do have a lot of choice. The poll features Booshniverse favourites including The IT Crowd, Zimbani, Little Crackers, Lizzie and Sarah, Chekov Comedy Shorts, Never Mind the Buzzcocks and many more. While you’re in a voting mood, there’s still time to vote for the acts that we cover on TVO in the NME Awards, where they also happen to have a ‘Best Website’ category.  If you’re feeling generous, why not cast a vote for your favourite Booshniverse-based website (hint, hint)?

Come Fly With Me Flies!

27 Dec

© Little Britain Productions / BBC Productions

New mockumentary sketch show Come Fly With Me, directed by Paul King, has debuted to impressive ratings despite a critical mauling.

The show, which is the first collaborative project between Matt Lucas & David Walliams post-Little Britain, also featured a surprise appearance from none other than Alice Lowe.

Initial overnight ratings suggest the first episode, broadcast on Christmas Day, was the third most watched program of the day with 10.3 million viewers – only marginally beaten by Doctor Who and top-rated program Eastenders on 11m.  However, these initial ratings do not take into account timeshifted viewing – that is, people who recorded the show to watch it later – so the final figures may Eastenders fall beneath Come Fly With Me and Doctor Who!

The episode is available on iPlayer for the next seven days.

Keen-eyed viewers may also have spotted another Booshniverse face during Doctor Who – as a be-goggled manservant was played by Tim Plester, the writer and co-star of Ant Muzak alongside Oram & Meeten many years ago.  It’s a small world, isn’t it?

Xmas Boosh On The Box

23 Dec

For those of you pining for a seasonal dose of Booshniverse, here’s a rundown of the TV that’s worth setting your Sky+ for…

First off there are the repeats of Little Crackers currently airing on Sky.  Julian Barratt’s episode airs on Sky2 at 01:45 on 26th December and 03:50 on 28th December; Julia Davis’ episode next airs on Sky2 at 03:20 on 26th; Chris O’Dowd’s airs on Sky2 at 01:15 on 26th December and 03:20 on 28th December; and finally  Bill Bailey’s episode (featuring the voice of Rich Fulcher) is repeated on Sky2 at 02:45 on 26th December and 18:15 on 27th.  Phew!

After that you can see Rich Fulcher in Unwrapped With Miranda Hart at 23:00 on BBC2 on 28th December.  The comedienne hosts a satirical look at the past 12 months, with contributions from guest stars, one of whom is Rich.

Next we’ve got the final 3 episodes of Never Mind The Buzzcocks with Noel Fielding as team captain alongside Phill Jupitus.   Episode 11 airs on 30th December with Robert Webb hosting and guests Chris Packham, Example, Cee-Lo Green and Andi Osho.  Episode 12, the final proper show of the current series, airs on 6th January, with Frankie Boyle as host and Pro Green, Goldie, Miles Jupp and Michelle Williams as guests.   Let’s hope that Frankie Boyle’s barbed presence will inject some energy into the series finale!  And then on the 13th January there will be a series compilation in case you forget what happened in 2010 through festive over-indulgence.

The brand new show from Mighty Boosh director Paul King will have its first airing on Christmas day. Come Fly With Me, the new comedy vehicle for Little Britain stars Matt Lucas and David Walliams, gets the Christmas hot spot on BBC1 at 22:00 on 25th December.

Father Ted fans can enjoy a special airing of selected episodes of the classic 1990s comedy series penned by IT Crowd’s Graham Linehan on Channel 4 on New Year’s Day.  And then finally we have Noel Fielding and Richard Ayoade as panelists on Channel 4′s Big Fat Quiz of The Year, airing on 3rd January at 21:30.

So, if any further excuse were needed not to venture too far from the sofa for the next couple of weeks, there you have it: your Cristmas viewing wrapped up (sorry).

Apologies if we’ve missed anyone or anything out.  If we have, please let us know!

Come Fly At Christmas

23 Nov

Matt Lucas and David Walliams’ new comedy vehicle Come Fly With Me, directed by Paul King of Mighty Boosh fame is set to feature in the BBC’s Christmas line-up.

© BBC

The series takes the form of a mock documentary set in one of the UK’s busiest airports, with Lucas and Walliams playing the range of characters you see above.  It looks like quite a step change for King, who is better known for the arts and crafts fantasy worlds he created for The Mighty Boosh and Bunny & The Bull.

When the Christmas TV schedules are published, we’ll let you know exactly when the series will be airing.

Bunny & The Bull & Veronica

1 Oct

© Finch's Quarterly review

Spanish actress, Veronica Echegui, who plays the part of Eloisa, the female lead in Paul King’s debut feature  Bunny & The Bull, has been interviewed on the website Sabotage Times.

Described by many as ‘the new Penelope Cruz’, in the interview Echegui talks about anything and everything – from learning to swear properly for the filming of B&TB  to her fear of water  and being attacked in a forest in Mexico.   We reckon her mind and her life sound colourful enough to classify her as a member of the extended Booshniverse family for now!

To read the interview in full visit the Sabotage Times website.

Bunny Comes To Big Chill

23 Jul

© Warp X

For anyone who’s off to the Big Chill Festival on the weekend 8th -9th August, or is still undecided as to whether to pop down for the festivities, then it may sway your  decision to know that on the Saturday there’s going to be a special screening of Bunny and the Bull, along with various activities throughout the film, as part of a series of events hosted by Warp Films in the film tent!
Bunny & The Bull centres around gambling, so of course there will be bets taken on human racing, Crabstick eating, and even bull versus matador bets! (human bulls obviously)
For Boosh fan attending this year’s  festival, we reckon this could be up there with last years I Spit On Your Rave taping, where the record was broken for the most zombies in one film - with all 30,000 of them led by King of the Zombies Noel Fielding.

Along with BatB, there is also going to be a screening of Chris Morris’ directing-début  film Four Lions, so it sounds like the festival is bursting with goodies (and that’s just in the film tent!).

If anyone is already packed, ready and raring to go for their Big Chill weekend and you manage to take part in the Bunny and the Bull fun, then we’d love to hear about it. Sadly, none of our TVO team can make it so reports back are encouraged!

For more information on the film tent events head here, and tickets can be swiped over yonder.

The Boosh Trend

29 Jun

© NME.com

Tonight’s seemingly random repeat of two classic episodes of The Mighty Boosh on BBC3 has proven popular with social networkers on Twitter, who have made ‘Mighty Boosh’ into one of the trending topics in the UK.

Twitter, for those who don’t know, offers micro-blogging of 140 characters or less, and several members of the Boosh and those in the wider world of Booshdom have accounts on there, including Noel Fielding, Dave Brown and Rich Fulcher amongst others.  Even we at TVO have an account on twitter @thevelvetonion!

A trending topic is simply a subject that is being mentioned in a large number of posts, and given the millions of people who use Twitter daily, anything getting into that list must be big news indeed… so, despite this being an unexpected repeat of an episode filmed almost three years ago, its still done wonders for the cult of Boosh tonight!

Over on our Twitter page, you can see the numerous people in the world of Booshdom who are worth following, and if you missed the episodes on BBC3 and don’t currently have them on dvd (and why not? They’re available from The Velvet Onion Amazon Store!) you can catch them again on the BBC’s iPlayer service for the next seven days right here and here.

And rest assured, BBC3 will be showing further episodes next Tuesday to ensure newcomers and long term fans alike get their Boosh fix!

If you can’t make the journey to China, don’t forget the film is available on DVD and Blu-ray!

And If we have any readers who are Beijing residents, then the screening will be taking place at 2pm and entry is 10 yuan, for more info head over here!

Russians Get Booshed!

11 Jun

Original Image © NME

The Mighty Boosh is now entertaining audiences in Russia via satellite station 2×2.

The channel, which was founded in 1989 and relaunched in 2007 after a period of closure, focuses on animation imports during the day, and it seems, comedy at night.

As well as the Boosh, Russian viewers can also watch Dan Clark in How Not To Live Your Life and Matt Berry in The Wrong Door, as well as Peep Show, Trigger Happy TV and the magnificent creation that is The Peter Serafinowicz Show.

It’s unclear to us non-Russian speaking peelers how long the channel has been broadcasting these shows, but YouTube user DamnRuTube uploaded this fascinating (and rather well made) trailer this week.

Check it out, and if there are any Russian readers out there, we’d love to hear more from you about how well the show is performing in your country!

According to venue 92YTribeca on twitter, which is hosting one of the many US screening of The Journey of the Childmen, The Boosh will be making an appearance alongside Oliver Ralfe for the Q&A!

There are no other details on which of them will be appearing, whether it be all or one of them, but this is an extra exciting treat for all the New Yorker fans attending!  Noel and Julian have been in New York for the last few weeks working on the forthcoming Mighty Boosh Album – something which we hope to bring you more news on soon… so its not too much of a leap to hope they will both make an appearance tomorrow night!

For more info you can head over to our previous post on the event. The 19.30 screening is completely sold out but there are still tickets available for the 22.00.

To any of you little Onions attending we would love to hear back about the night in all its Childmen beauty! And don’t forget you can have a chat about it with other US Booshies over at TVO forum by clicking the icon below!

Oliver Trix!

The rather wonderful Oliver Ralfe has been kind enough to give an exclusive interview to TVO’s US correspondent ‘Trixie’!

The head honcho from The Ralfe Band – who scored Paul King‘s recent movie marvel Bunny and the Bull and appeared in series two of The Mighty Boosh - spoke to Trixie after the first American screening of his documentary Journey Of The Childmen – which tells the story of The Mighty Boosh on tour. To hear what Oliver has to say, simply press the great big play button below.

The Ralfe Band play Truck Festival in Oxford on 24th July and Port Eliot Festival in Cornwall the following day.  For more details, visit their Myspace page.

Oliver Ralfe’s documentary on The Future Sailors tour will be shown on Sunday 6th June at 9.25pm at The Art Theatre, 2025 E 4th St, Long Beach, CA, 90814.

This will be followed by a live Q and A with Oliver Ralfe himself, so this is a great opportunity for you lucky Californians to see the whole film and ask questions about it.

Extracts from the documentary appeared on the Future Sailors tour dvd back in November, but the full length film has not been released yet. To see the trailer click here

The film, offers a great insight into how the boys worked together during their five months on tour and features a soundtrack by the wonderful Ralfe Band, and the glorious Fielding-inspired Amongst The Dandies by Antony Elvin.

Paul King has been confirmed as the director for a new BBC1 TV show featuring Little Britain stars David Walliams and Matt Lucas.  The six-part series has the working title ‘Come Fly With Me’ and is set in a busy airport. It promises all new characters from the pair, along with special guest appearances throughout the series.   We at the Onion hope that Paul will be leveraging his Boosh connections for those guest appearances!

The series is now in pre-production and will be filmed in HD for broadcast later this year.  It will be produced by Adam Tandy, whose credits include The Thick Of It and In The Loop

Journey Of The Childmen – the feature length documentary by Oly Ralfe which follows The Mighty Boosh on their 2008/9 UK tour – is to receive its American premiere later this month.

The film is set to be screened at The Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Massachusetts on May 28th & 29th.  Tickets are a mere $9.75 – and anyone who purchases The Mighty Book Of Boosh from local book store Brookline Booksmith can buy a ticket for a discounted price of $6.75.

JOTC was filmed across the mammoth 90+ date UK tour undertaken by The Boosh in the Autumn of 2008, visiting everything from tiny theaters to full-blown arenas.  The film provides an intimate portrait of life on the road for the fab five, and is essential viewing for any Boosh fan.  A teaser segment of the film was included on the Future Sailors tour dvd last year, and hopefully a full release on dvd and blu-ray is forthcoming.

You can view the trailer below, and for more details, visit the Coolidge Corner Theatre website.

It’s another quiet weekend in the Booshniverse, so we here at The Velvet Onion thought we would bring back our semi-regular calendar, reminding you of all the great things coming up to savour in the coming weeks.

And there’s bound to be much, much more to come. With The IT Crowd 4.0 now in the edit suite, a new Jackal Film expected later this month, Rich Fulcher keeping busy in Los Angeles before a run of shows in London, and the still unconfirmed transmission of Zimbani featuring Julian Barratt, there’s plenty to keep coming back for news on.

You can always rely on The Velvet Onion for up-to-date gig info and other news from the realm of Booshdom. Once again, thank you for your continued support over the last few months – wether you be an ardent fan, or one of those we feature on these pages – we love your goodwill, and urge you to keep on peeling!

There are times when we here at The Velvet Onion are lucky enough to give you the exclusive scoop.  There are other times when we tell you as soon as we hear about things.  And then there are the occasions when something slips us by.

The downright wonderful Paul King‘s interview with Roll Credits at the end of March is one such example – if we’d noticed this, we’d have brought you the news of his collaboration with the Pajama Men much sooner!  In the interview, Paul talks about his approach to making Bunny And The Bull, his time on The Mighty Boosh and his early hopes for Paddington Bear.

You can read the interview over at Roll Credits right here, and see it as a timely reminder, if you’ve not already purchased Bunny And The Bull to pick up the film on dvd via The Velvet Onion Amazon Store.  It’s a glorious piece of work – that manages to break your heart and warm your cockles at the same time.  You can read BabyOnFire’s in depth review of the film exclusively here.
