Don’t See Fulcher

24 Apr

© BBC

Rich Fulcher will be making a somewhat stealth appearance at the famous Underbelly Festival later this year.

Comedy In The Dark is giving you the chance to go into the famous purple cow literally in the dark! The evenings will consist of a line-up who will perform to their audience with no lights whatsoever.

Rich will be taking part on June 18th and we can’t imagine what is going through that mind of his, so this is something not to be missed!

Tickets are £12.50 and can be bought right here along with other dates throughout spring. On the night of the Fulcher, he will also be joined by Marcel Lucont, Arthur Smith and Pat Monahan who will be compering.

Will we be (not) seeing you there?

Club Fantastico: Theatre Of The Absurd

17 Apr

© Oram & Meeten

Last Thursday saw the hotly-anticipated return of Club Fantastico, Steve Oram and Tom Meeten’s somewhat unhinged comedy night.

With guest appearances from Alice Lowe, Waen Shepherd and Rich Fulcher, The Velvet Onion was, naturally, on hand at The Vandella in Shepherds Bush to experience the madness.

Velveteer Mog reports…

Club Fantastico is a difficult beast to pin down. For a brief, fleeting moment at the start of the show, you’d be forgiven for thinking Oram and Meeten are a traditional comedy double act: two blokes (one with beard) in smart grey suits, matey banter with a northern twang – it’s there.

Then, slowly at first, strange things start to happen, as if a LSD-spiked dream is gradually revealing itself on stage. Oram’s hilarious, heaving hatred of The Manic Street Preachers seems to be the catalyst, swiftly followed the techno aggression of Sean the Prawn (menacing as hell in a salmon-pink mac). It’s at this point you realise it’s going to be a very silly night indeed.

© Mog

The acts come thick and fast, each one fractionally more bizzarre than the one that precedes it: A 1940′s wartime lesbian wrestling singalong with the fantastically talented Alice Lowe; then Waen Shepherd who’s painted up like one of the weirder characters from Blue Velvet, singing ear-boggling songs like “Saucy Little Infant” , that are as clever and funny as they are inappropriate.

© Mog

This is followed by a foul-mouthed, sarcastic baby with a vibrator, played a little too convincingly (for someone about to become a parent!) by Rich Fulcher.

“I have no moral compass, I’m a baby!” he hollers at the front few rows.  A throwback to his Jackal Films cameo, thanks to his performance I will never think about my nether regions in quite the same way again. Cheers, Rich.

This procession of oddness is punctuated by pitch-perfect deadpan conversations with Oram and Meeten’s beyond-mundane friend “John” (Alex Kirk) from the back of the room. While apparently throwaway, these help to reset vibe in the venue for the next performance.

The show ends with the infamous Club Fantastico Beauty Contest: a close-run showdown between a horny feral German (Lowe), a defecating Geisha  (Sean, formerly of ‘prawn’ fame) and Blake Lively (Waen Shepherd). Gloriously silly stuff!

© Mog

This was an evening with the potential to exclude the audience with its strangeness. However the oddness of the acts was beautifully balanced by Oram and Meeten’s between-act stage presence, which leant the evening a joyful energy and charm that carried the audience along in a warm embrace.

© Mog

The dynamic between the two performers is perfectly pitched, each one taking their turn in the spotlight, while the other provides a supportive comedic harmony. So we get to admire Meeten’s deranged Irish singer, silenced only by the bag on his head, and of course the divine Mary, Oram’s sublime alter-ego with bad teeth and a red dress. Each in turn, and also together. Tonight, the evening is Oram and Meeten’s.

Club Fantastico offers a thoroughly modern take on Vaudeville theatre, managing to strike the tricky balance between chaos and watchability. From the crowd’s noisy reaction to the performances it’s clear that it’s a club with a lot of support. When that the crowd includes the likes of of Julian Barratt, Dan Clark, Simon Farnaby & Arnab Chanda, as it did last week, that’s not to be sniffed at.

Club Fantastico returns to The Vandella next month. For more info as soon as we get it, stay peeled.

Driver Dave Sets Off!

14 Apr

© Afrikids

Later today, Dave Brown sets off in the direction of Africa, to drive an ambulance to Ghana in aid of AfriKids!

Two emergency vehicles have been donated to the charity, which is responding to the difficult conditions in the Upper East Region of Ghana.  The region is in urgent need of medical equipment and care, with one in nine children dying before their fifth birthday, and only one doctor to every 36,000 people.

They also only have seven working ambulances for a population of over a million – and as a result, Dave is joining a number of volunteers raising money to buy more!  The two donated vehicles will hopefully only be the start of this quest… and you, dear peelers, can help them along the way.

Dave has set up a Just Giving page RIGHT HERE – and has already raised over £3,000.  If you have any spare cash, and haven’t donated yet, perhaps it could go to this noble cause?  You can also donate £5 simply by texting VAFN50 to 70070.

Old Gregg & The Deevil

13 Apr

© Strange Music, Inc.

One of the weirdest stories The Velvet Onion has come across in its time was that bizarre moment when cyber-voiced rapper T-Pain sung a modified version of “Electroboy” over a banging club tune early last year.

Now it seems another urban star has taken inspiration from The Boosh – with underground Kansas City rapper Godemis quoting everyone’s favourite salt-water creature on the lead single from his debut mix-tape album.

Entitled simply, “Ol’ Gregg”, the track is a surprisingly effective and eclectic slice of contemporary hip hop punctuated by lines we Boosh fans know backwards.  You can see the video below.

If you like what you hear, the track and indeed the entirety of Godemis’ debut The Deevil, can be downloaded from DatPiff for free now after registration.

Editors note: thanks to Eanna Holton for pointing us towards this one!

If you haven’t heard about the film or have forgotten what it’s about have a look at our review, or you can watch the trailer below.

If you can’t make it to London the DVD is available from the TVO store.

Fielding’s Perspectives on Spike

7 Apr

© GETTY

Noel Fielding is set to appear this Sunday on the ITV1 series Perspectives, in an episode devoted to Spike Milligan.

John Sergeant will host the documentary, which coincides with the tenth anniversary of comedy forefather Milligan’s death.

In telling the tale of how Milligan came to define alternative British comedy, Sergeant visits spots said to have impacted on Milligan at some point in his life – including the pub above which The Goon Show was born.

Sergeant also chats to people who’ve been influenced or touched by Milligan’s work, one of whom is Noel.

Episode 3 of Perspectives airs on Sunday, April 8 at 10.15pm on ITV1.

Bitesize Rich

5 Apr

© bbc.co.uk

Are you struggling with your GCSE History revision? Would you like a bit of help? Well it’s your lucky day, Rich Fulcher is narrating some of the BBC GCSE Bitesize revision videos on the BBC website.

So far we’ve found him talking about the outbreak of the first world war, the League of Nations and who was to blame for World War 2!

Even if you’re not studying for your exams, it’s well worth a look at the videos and you might learn something useful!

The first video narrated by Rich is here, find the others by going back to the index, and if you find more Fulcher snippets, please let us know.

Art By Fielding

3 Apr

It’s been a good week for anyone with a keen interest in both art and Noel Fielding.

© Noel Fielding @ Hooligan Art Dealer

Noel’s art dealer, Hooligan Art Dealer, has made available a new selection of his work on her website. There are 26 new pieces in all, including a series of studies of Elvis, and a new painting of the rampant Chlamydia Tiger, made famous in series 1 of Noel Fielding’s Luxury Comedy.  All the art is signed by Noel with prices available on request. To view the full collection check out Hooligan Art Dealer’s website.

As most of you will know by now, Noel also featured in last night’s Damien Hirst special on Channel 4. Yesterday’s evening of special programming about Hirst is timed to coincide with his new show at Tate Modern in London. Noel can be seen interviewing him in The First Look, which is available to view for 28 days on 4od by clicking here. Remember that UK dwellers can also experience a 360-degree tour of Hirst’s exhibition with Noel as your tour guide here.

Twitter fans will probably be aware that Noel’s appearance on the show provoked a spot of snobbery from the Times art critic, Waldemar Januszczak, causing a somewhat enthusiastically barbed response from Noel’s followers.  The reaction caused Noel to trend on Twitter… and you can see the results on his Twitter page here.

Editors note: Whilst we at TVO will always support Noel, we are remaining on the outside of this one!

Fulcher’s F***** Up!

2 Apr

© Rich Fulcher

Rich Fulcher is launching two new events this month at two favourite TVO venues.

First up on April 9th, Rich is launching his new club night - Rich Fulcher And His Fucked Up Friends at The Vandella, Shepherd’s Bush.  The evening promises standup madness filled with Fulcher’s favourite friends and even some people he knows.

The first edition features Morgan Murphy from Comedians Of Comedy, who also writes for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.  The Vandella, of course, is the location of The Velvet Onion LiveClub Fantastico and The Forgery Club – clearly THE place to be for comedy right now!

Tickets are available now for just £7 via Ticketweb.

A few days later, on April 18th, Rich returns to the equally fab Soho Theatre, for a four night run entitled Rich Fulcher’s Guide To The US Elections.  Rich is absolutely hooked on the Politics channel, so we know he’s done his research for this one, and we’re sure his anarchic wit will be in full flight that evening!

Tickets for this show, which runs until April 21st, are available now for £10 (except Wednesday which is half price), via Ents24.

Club Fantastico!

2 Apr

© Oram & Meeten

The first of Oram & Meeten‘s Club Fantastico nights takes place on April 12th, and its line-up is certainly looking likely to live up to its name!

Joining Steve Oram and Tom Meeten that night will be TVO’s very own Rich FulcherAlice Lowe and Waen Shepherd – alongside Alex King (who frequently collaborates with Gareth Tunley), and the enigmatically named Sean The Prawn.

Meanwhile, its hosts promise an Irish folk duo, Roger’s Nest, female wrestling from the 1940s and the Club Fantastico Beauty Contest.  It’s all sounding too good to be true!

The show takes place at The Vandella (home of The Velvet Onion Live!) on April 12th, with tickets available now for only £7.50 (£10 on door).  Get down there and laugh your faces off.

Julian Barratt has been busy lately! He was interviewed by the Adult Swim blog, and tells all about his obsession with a Swedish film director, and how this influenced him when directing the new video for Tanlines.

Julian Barratt will be providing the narration for an innovative new entertainment experience, The Random Adventures of Brandon Generator.

Brandon is a would-be writer whose world unravels as he looks for inspiration. The Random Adventures of Brandon Generator is an immersive web-based film/game/comic experience that the viewer can shape as it unfolds.

Although the project is actually a thinly-veiled marketing exercise for Intermet Explorer, the people involved  suggest it’s still worth keeping an eye on it. In addition to Julian’s vocal talents, Brandon Generator is written by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) and drawn by renowned Marvel artist Tommy Lee Edwards.
