A new commercial featuring two TVO regulars has begun airing on television this weekend.

The ad for job search website Reed features Rufus Jones as the Captain of the Reed Spaceship, fixing the careers of the good people of Blighty – including Richard Sandling, who makes a great beefeater!

It began airing this weekend across digital and terrestrial channels, including an appearance during The Big Fat Quiz Of The Year featuring Noel Fielding and Richard Ayoade – a very Oniony Sunday evening, then!

You can see the commercial, directed by film directing duo Matt Laroche and Jonathan Brooks and produced by Paul Weiland (director of Blackadder Back & Forth), below.

The rights to the much-loved and much-missed UK comedy series, Pulling, have been bought by the ABC network in America.

For the uninitiated, Pulling was co-written by and starred Sharon Horgan as Donna, one of three female friends who live in London. The BAFTA-nominated show ran for two series from 2006 to 2008, only to be cancelled by the BBC in a move that surprised everyone – least of all its cast. Thankfully fans were granted an hour-long special in 2009 to wrap up the storylines and bring things to a close.

Bad Teachers writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky will write the US adaptation. Horgan and Dennis Kelly, who created of the original series, will executive produce with them. ABC first took a stab at developing an US version of Pulling during the 2008-09 season; the project went to pilot but not to full series.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens with this latest incarnation of the show (let’s be honest, US adaptations can be hit and miss affairs…). Let’s hope this one generates as much positive buzz as the show garnered in the UK when it first aired.

How To Live Your Life With Songs And Maybe Jokes

27 Sep

It’s a bumper news day for Dan Clark fans and here is a summary of what’s to be expected!

A trailer for Clarks upcoming UK tour with These Songs May Contain Jokes has been released!  Clark begins the journey in Nottingham on 25th October with his band including Jimmy Simms and Ben Parker. They’ll be taking some new songs, some old and some How Not To Live… classics on the road with them.

Check out the trailer below and if that couldn’t hype it up anymore, we’ve been unanimous at TVO HQ that the show is astoundingly better than it comes across!  Clark will start in Nottingham and then heading to Brighton, Birmingham, Manchester, London, Bath and rounding it all off in Cardiff. Book your tickets right here and keep peeling for anymore info that comes our way!

If you are unable to make the tour or just can’t get enough of Clark & co, then here is your reminder that the full boxset of How Not To Live Your Life will be available to buy from next Monday! From 1st October you can get your hands on all three series of the show plus the Christmas special finale and some extra special features in one chunky boxset. Bag it in our TVO Shop along with Dan Clark’s full back-catalogue of work!

The Christmas special not only guest-starred Julia Davis as a hilarious, Human Remains-esque creepy neighbour, but the show has been sprinkled with so many great cameos throughout that it’s been a treat in itself.  Rich Fulcher fronted the cameos when he appeared in the original pilot (which we are yet to get our hands on since it’s airing!) , also Arnab Chanda makes a great appearance as the teen that bullies Don for being ‘old’. Plus Tom Meeten made a great triple appearance, first as a Michael Jackson impersonator, an angry tramp and then as an uptight interviewer – (I’d like to imagine that this was all one character throughout the lifespan of the show).
One of the most memorable cameos of all had to be Julian Barratt playing Jackson; Sam’s boyfriend the poetic and “melody-word-formation” (song) writer in series two. For the premier episode of series three, Noel Fielding then took a different turn for his cameo as Marcus, Don’s slick straight-talking boss.

You can read Dan Clark talking about his comedy affiliates and much more in our past interviews, click here yonder to take a look!

The NTA is Back!

24 Sep

It’s that time of the year again when the cream of the small screen will gather for the National Televisions Awards.

As usual, the results are all down to us normal folk and some TVO-familiar names are waiting for your votes!

First up Never Mind the Buzzcocks is nominated for Best Comedy Panel Show and with the hype of the upcoming season, Buzzcocks should hopefully be fresh in all of your minds! Next up is the pivotal, Best Situation Comedy; with Gervais’ Life’s Too Short featuring Matthew Holness and Colin Hoult up for the award, they also battle it out with Rev; which cameod James Bachman, plus the latest series of Absolutely Fabulous which saw the likes of our very own Katy Wix and Lucy Montgomery making an appearance.

And that’s not all… with the somewhat less-than-alternative Not Going Out starring Katy Wix and ITV1 ultra-populist behemoth Benidorm featuring Shelley Longworth also up for the nod. They may all be up for the gong alongside the latest-show-to-never-rest-on-our-tv-screens; The Big Bang Theory – but we reckon one of our lot could be in with the chance, no?

As we click through the categories we get to the ‘Bacon-style’ number categories; where Harry Hill’s TV Burp (Spencer Millman) is up for best Entertainment Programme, plus Noel Fielding has made a guest appearance on several of the nominees in the same category; The Jonathan Ross Show, Alan Carr: Chattyman and of course, Dynamo: Magician Impossible.

The NTA’s will be airing live on ITV on January 23rd and you have until October 11th to vote. To cast your votes click right here and let us know what you think of this year’s nominees!

Elvin, The Prince & The Pauper

23 Sep

Antony Elvin will be Musical Director for a production of  The Prince and The Pauper at The Unicorn Theatre in London later this year.

© Unicorn Theatre

He is also writing the music for the production which will run from 25th November 2012 to 13th January 2013. The play is set in the 16th Century, and is an adaptation of the Mark Twain classic tale of confused identities.

Adapted by Jemma Kennedy and directed by Selina Cartmel, we’re assured it’s safe family viewing, “yet a little twisted,” according to Elvin!

There will be a special foyer event before and after the play on 9th and 23rd December at which Princes in The Tower will perform and Tudor delicacies will be served. For more information about the production take a look at this, and to book tickets click here.

Fans of Antony Elvin and Will Summers‘ music can also see them as Antony Elvin and the Tudor Unit on Wednesday 17th October, when they perform at the Society of Imaginary Friends Soiree. This event takes place upstairs 8-11pm at the Clerk and Well pub, 156 Clerkenwell Road, London EC1R 5DU. And what’s more, entry is free!

Arnab Writes

23 Sep

© The List

Arnab Chanda may be a quiet one amongst our list of comics, but his personal blog speaks for itself.

Arnab Chanda Writes is a series of blog entries that retale recent and old anecdotes, voices some strong opinions on today’s society and life in general, plus…it’s pretty darn funny.

Accompanied by the odd video, Arnab has so far covered his opinions/experience on the Grindr app, his ‘baby face’ and stint as a tennis pro in Saudi Arabia! His views on certain subjects really is something to check out and sooner or later, you’ll find yourself coming back as a regular reader.

Have a read of Arnab’s blog right here and we look forward to many more entries to come!

Noel News Round-Up

23 Sep

© Hooligan Art Dealer

It’s one of those weeks when there are a few Noel Fielding-related happenings to tell you about, so we thought we’d wrap them all up in a handy single-serving…cos we’re nice like that:

There’s a short and charmingly modest interview with Noel in today’s Sunday Times in the Witter column. Unfortunately, The Times isn’t available to view online without a subscription (boo!), but in the article Noel talks about starting meditation (“I like to imagine it’s like a chimney sweeper cleaning out all the thoughts in my head”), the fact that he can sell his paintings for serious amount of money (“One sold for £10,000. I was flabbergasted. I had to lie down for a year”), and tanking on stage in the early days (“Once I died at a ball in Wales. Orville the Duck was on after me and he smashed it!”). Worth a read if you can get your hands on it.

© Channel 4

Next up is a reminder to hunker down in front of the telly (or set your videos…or whatever it is folk do these days) at 10pm tomorrow, Monday, for the first episode of the new series of Never Mind the Buzzcocks. The series airs on BBC2 and once again, features Noel as one of the team captains.

What’s more you can also end your week with a serving of Noel on the box, as he and Richard Ayoade appear on Channel 4’s Big Fat Quiz of the 00s.

The show airs at 9pm on 30th September, with Alan Carr, Kevin Bridges, David Mitchell, Sarah Millican also starring (with Jimmy Carr as host, of course).

And finally, something for Fielding fans that’s not strictly news, but has been taking the discussion boards by storm this weekend. Some of you have already been there, done that, but for those who haven’t, Noel Fielding’s Luxury Dress Up Game by oohyeahthatpleasesme  allows you to design Noel’s wardrobe by choosing from a selection of his best-known outfits, from both on and off-screen. While this isn’t the kind of thing we usually write about on TVO, this particular game is so well-done and so much fun, we had to share it. Click here to play the Beta version.

Rhys Thomas’ new documentary on the life of Freddie Mercury is to air on BBC One in October.

The feature length The Great Pretender is the follow up to the acclaimed two-part BBC4 documentary around Mercury’s band Queen, Days Of Our Lives – which was the grand finale to the band’s 40th anniversary celebrations last year.

The documentary is released on dvd and blu-ray on Monday, both of which can be pre-ordered from The Velvet Onion Amazon Store, and you can see a trailer for the release below.

An edited version will air on the BBC’s flagship channel next month.  As soon as we hear of a confirmed tx date, we’ll be sure to let you know.

The Increasingly Large DVD Collections Of Todd Margaret Fans

22 Sep

© 2|Entertain

Series One of cult US/UK crossover sitcom The Increasingly Poor Decisions Of Todd Margaret is released on dvd in the UK on Monday.

The show was created by American stand-up and actor David Cross, and originally aired as a backdoor pilot as part of Channel 4’s Comedy Showcase series in 2009.  Two six part seasons followed in Autumn 2010 and the early part of this year via American channel IFC and UK-based digital channel More4, though the latter has yet to air the second series in the UK.

TVO’s main link into the show is Cross’ leading co-star: the inimitable Sharon Horgan – though there are further connections to the realm of Onion-land, as Justin Edwards and Hunderby star Alex MacQueen also make recurring appearances throughout the run, whilst Dan Tetsell also crops up in season one, and Rufus JonesSteve OramLucy Montgomery and Shelley Longworth all make an appearance in the second batch of episodes.

Tucked away on an obscure digital channel, we have to confess this one almost slipped us by – and we’re pleased to learn the show has a dedicated cult following.  Already available on dvd in the US, the release of the first series on this side of the Pond bodes well for a broadcast of the second series sometime soon – and we’ll be keeping an eye on any developments.  In the meantime, you can pre-order Series One here, or pick up its R1 release over yonder.

Hamming It Up With Fulcher

21 Sep

© Funny Or Die

What would cause a man to befriend a double cheeseburger? Rich Fulcher investigates this very issue in a new Funny or Die sketch.

The ‘documentary’ revolves around Joe Nunez (Bridesmaids, The Watch) adopting an unlikely friend, in the form of a double cheeseburger. Fulcher’s role in the sketch is that of Professor Richard Fulcher from Cambridge University. Of course!

Somehow managing to keep a straight face and deliver lines such as, “It is my hypothesis that this never before seen type of pair-bonding occurred due to Joe’s recent traumatic loss of a Baha burrito,” Fulcher makes the sketch believable… believe it or not!

The 4 minute long video shows the comic at his best, and one of the viewers has commented on the video with “Rich Fulcher is an undiscovered American treasure”. We fully agree!

So if you like Rich’s face, cheeseburgers, montages and cats – then this is the video for you. Take a look for yourself over at the Funny or Die website.

A Piece Of Fielding

19 Sep

© Megan Giboin

A short, but rather sweet, interview with Noel Fielding appeared in yesterday’s Guardian newspaper.

In the piece Noel talks about how he got into stand-up, the relationship he has between comedy and art, his ambitions and the people he admires.  He also shares a few (less familiar) moments of introspection and regret, incuding prettyemphatic confirmation that the Boosh movie is unlikely to happen: “I wish [Mighty Boosh partner Julian Barratt and I] had done a film. We had offers, but we never took them up,” says Noel.

There’s a dark cloud above TVO Towers which we could swear is made out of the collective mournful sighs of everyone out there. To read the interview in full click here.

Don’t forget that Noel has donated one of his paintings to the forthcoming De’Longhi Art Auction in aid of Macmillan, the amazingly brilliant cancer care charity. The auction takes place this coming Tuesday; for more information about the event and the charity take a look at this.
