Lower East Snuff

Earlier this month, Rich Fulcher and Matt Berry embarked on a journey to promote Snuff Box in Los Angeles and Toronto. This week, Rich made it to New York for some final east coast Snuff.

“Of course it’ll be funny, it’s f*cking Fulcher!”

Snuff Box has been released on DVD in America! Rich Fulcher took New York City by storm on Tuesday night, concluding the mini Snuff Box press tour he and Matt Berry began last week in Los Angeles. Rich started the night with a DVD signing at popular East Village shop Kim’s. As well as stocking their shelves with the US Snuff Box DVD, out in the states from 11 Oct., they offer Boosh favourite Richard Ayoade’s Submarine. Though a modest audience—Rich himself sarcastically remarked that it was “the biggest turnout he’d ever seen”— self-proclaimed nerdy Snuff Box fans showed up in full force; Rich was inundated by Snuff Box and Boosh DVDS, and copies of his book, Tiny Acts of Rebellion.

Following Kim’s, Rich returned to his familiar stomping grounds (as he literally STOMPED onto the stage) at Upright Citizens Brigade. The newly opened UCB East was packed with Snuff devotees, with Kristen Schaal among the array of celebrity guests.  Comedianne and author Julie Klausner co-hosted the night, which began with Rich relaying the tale of Snuff Box’s formation. “Initially”, Fulcher proposed, “we wanted to do a ghost detective show.” The rest, as they say, is history…

A short clip from the documentary showed Noel Fielding calling Rich “definitely American”, as well as famous faces Paul Rudd, Weird Al Yankovic, and Curtis Gwinn all marvelling at Snuff Box’s uniqueness. Matt and Rich went on to discuss how submitting roughly half of what would become Snuff Box episode one to an at the time sketch-show-hungry BBC3 landed them a full series.

Rich screened the admittedly ‘disjointed’ first episode to the boisterous crowd. Matt’s infamous theme tune falsetto was practically drowned out by applause as the narrow theatre became enveloped with vim. Particular fan favourites such as Rapper with a Baby, How To Learn Guitar, and Rich as Mama Cass also received impressive acclaims.  Equally as impressive was the audible disgust in the theatre upon seeing Matt’s thong!

The floor was then opened for “Awkward” Q&A. Rich addressed the fans, saying they’re the only ones who he [and Matt] trusts! He touched upon his journey from UCB in Chicago to Edinburgh, and how the classically UCB-esque style of longform improv helped shape Snuff Box. Many of the audience’s inquiries revolved around the show’s musical composition, hence Matt’s absence was felt by all- he’s been off shooting film called Snow White and the Huntsman. Also a word to the wise in another case of Matt’s absence: if you ever see Rich, prod him to do a Matt Berry impression. The results are too brilliant to pass up! Rich explained how well he and Matt juxtaposed each other; Matt’s love of “Victorian England, James Bond, 1960s music, tits, and time travel” compliments Rich’s “…silliness”.  A forgotten favourite of sorts made a cameo as well: Eleanor the Tour Whore briefly hinted at the possibility of visiting the Big Apple. When asked about the ever-forthcoming Boosh album, Rich eagerly said the boys were hoping to have another project for a dual release soon, and added that he is going to be featured in “a few” episodes of Noel Fielding’s Luxury Comedy in January.

Snuff Box, the US release, is available HERE, and the original UK release can be purchased from the The Velvet Onion Amazon Store.

Loving the first photo in this post! The sinister headless figure in the background is the cherry on top.
