We at The Velvet Onion always try to give you exclusive information about everyone in the Booshniverse, and this time we have turned our attention towards the musical part of the Booshdom.

With the Into Asylum Tour coming up in October and the London show at Heaven just around the corner, we managed to score an interview with IAMX.

Janine Gezang, IAMX’s keyboard and bass player, was kind enough to answer all our questions about her involvement in the band, her fellow band members, and what the future has in store for the band.

You can read the answers to that and much more below, and tickets to the IAMX tour can be found here.

Hi Janine, welcome to The Velvet Onion!

For the readers who don’t know, how did you get involved in IAMX?

I was a lonely suicidal musician in Berlin with no perspective. I worked 12-hour-shifts in a betting office with neon light, no windows, full of smoke and greasy ugly men. One night I forced myself to go out and connect to people. Although I hated the idea of socialising, I had a feeling it would save me from going insane.

I met a group of people that knew Reza, the IAMX manager. Before I knew I sat in a gay bar with Reza and Chris, they gave me a keyboard and told me to learn some songs for next week’s rehearsal. I was a bass player and had never played in front of more than 30 people. My next concert was as a keyboard player one month later in front of 4000 crazy Belgians and ten huge TV cameras. I will tell you about this cathartic show in detail if you ask me next time.

IAMX has saved my life and I will never go back. (more…)

Barking

A vintage late 90s sketch series featuring Tony Way and a host of other big names is being released on dvd in November.

Barking was made for Channel 4 back in 1998, and as if to prove that nothing really changes, was immediately dumped in a graveyard slot and denied a second series.  Sound familiar?

What made Barking so unique is that its stars all went on to great success in their own right.  The show features a cast list which would be nigh on impossible to contain in one show now: Catherine Tate, David Walliams, Peter Kay, Omid Djalili, Mackenzie Crook, Marcus Brigstock and the trio formerly known as Stay Alive Pepi – Rhys Thomas, Steve Burge & our very own Tony Paul Way.

Tony has written about his experience on this, his first proper telly gig, and his earlier experiences guesting on the third series of The Fast Show, on his blog over yonder, where he also reveals the pilot episode was bolstered by The League Of Gentlemen, no less!

Of course, some of those stars have continued their associations with the acts we regularly cover on The Velvet Onion, too.  Catherine Tate went on to appear in the second series of Big Train, replacing our very own Julia Davies, and more recently appeared on Never Mind The Buzzcocks with Noel Fielding.  David Walliams hired Paul King to direct his airport based sketch-show with Matt Lucas, Come Fly With Me.  Omid Djalili hired Rich Fulcher to appear in his self-titled series, whilst Mackenzie Crook apeared in Ant Muzak alongside Oram & Meeten.

That’s not all.  Marcus Brigstock regularly appears on children’s sketch show Sorry, I’ve Got No Head with James Bachman, Rhys Thomas was a major part of Blunder with Tony Way, Simon Farnaby and Tom Meeten – and Steve Burge recently collaborated once more with Tony Way on a series of hilarious sketches which also featured input from Steve Oram and James Bachman.  It’s a small world, comedy, isn’t it?

Barking is available to pre-order now from The Velvet Onion Amazon Store, priced just £9.99.  The release is expected on November 7th.

As we ease into the rich season of Autumn then why don’t you wrap up in your woolies and head to Kings Place this October 27th for a blast of an evening.
